People set off firecrackers, put up Spring Festival couplets, and perform dragon and lion dances to drive away the Nian beast to welcome the arrival of the New Year.

Traditional customs: There are many traditional customs and activities during the Chinese Spring Festival. These include pasting Spring Festival couplets, pasting window grilles, sweeping dust, buying New Year goods, having a reunion dinner, paying New Year greetings, setting off firecrackers, dragon and lion dances, watching fireworks, etc. These customs represent the meaning of praying for blessings, bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new, exorcising evil spirits and celebrating the harvest.
